The SO: To Speak Festival brings together writers, poets, storytellers, and performers from across Southampton and beyond for a multi-day celebration of the written and spoken word. Across venues such as the central library, art houses, theatres, and cafés, the festival creates spaces where literature feels immediate and alive. Attendees can discover new voices in poetry, engage with thought-provoking conversations about writing and creativity, and experience live performances that blend comedy, drama, and literary tradition. The festival is designed to be welcoming to all, whether someone is a seasoned author or simply someone who loves a good story told well.
A key strength of the festival lies in its diverse programming, which spans everything from open mic nights and poetry slams to creative writing workshops and heritage walks. These events encourage participation as much as observation, giving local writers and aspiring storytellers a chance to share their work in supportive settings. Workshops led by experienced practitioners cover genres from crime fiction to flash fiction, while storytelling sessions for younger audiences ensure that the love of words is passed on to the next generation. The result is a festival that feels both intimate and expansive.
Southampton itself becomes a character in the festival, with events spread across its historic docks, cultural venues, and community spaces. The festival highlights the city's literary connections, from its maritime heritage to its thriving contemporary arts scene. Attendees might find themselves in a Regency-inspired tea party one afternoon and a live literature showcase the next evening. This sense of place grounds the festival in the local community while also attracting visitors who want to experience Southampton through the lens of its writers and performers.
Beyond the scheduled events, the festival fosters a spirit of connection and creative exchange that lingers long after the final performance. Conversations sparked in workshops continue over coffee, and new collaborations between writers often begin during the festival's social gatherings. The organisers prioritise accessibility and inclusivity, ensuring that the programme reflects a wide range of voices and experiences. Whether it is a dementia-friendly afternoon, a Halloween-themed showcase, or a serious discussion about the craft of writing, the festival offers something meaningful for everyone who walks through its doors.
